This design incorporates two recognisable Celtic symbols, the triskele and labyrinth. The triskele is derived from the Greek word “triskeles” meaning three legs. The branches of the Celtic triskele are comprised of interlocking spirals which appear in motion. The composition, featuring a turquoise background with labyrinth motif in bronze, houses within its centre triskeles with gold and black background.

Although generally considered a Celtic symbol the triskele is in fact a pre-Celtic symbol dating back to the Neolithic Age. Examples of the design have been found carved on large boulders at the main entrance of Newgrange burial site in County Meath, Ireland. Newgrange, which was built around 3200 B.C., predates Stonehenge and the Pyramids. In Celtic Christianity the triskele took on new meaning as a symbol of the Holy Trinity, Father Son and Holy Spirit. The Celtic labyrinth which surrounds the triskele can also be found on medieval manuscripts and on headstones through out the cemeteries of Ireland. Labyrinths are sometimes used as tools for meditation, inner reflection, and spiritual journeying.
